Standing on the Promises

This is one of our new hymns, #1023. It is a upbeat, fun song with many repeating phrases that makes it easier for children to learn and join in singing quickly. You can find some information about this song, it’s composer and activities for families or classes here. You can find a copy of the music here.

Learning this song would be excellent time to reinforce the covenant path. As noted on the bottom of the hymn, the Apostle Paul exhorted us to “stand,” placing our trust in God’s promises. As we keep our covenants and rely on God’s word, we will be able to withstand the perils of the latter days.

You can find some visuals to teach the covenant path here.

A Few Tips For Teaching

I have chosen to focus on the word “standing” to teach this song. I have created some visuals to help you get the children up and moving. This will help them learn this song quicker and as you change up their standing positions. You are also able to review the song many times without them getting board.

Cut the movement pictures down the center of the page.

When you sing the verses, you can use the sitting down pictures for each phrase. (They are labeled) The last phrase of the verse has a picture of standing. Children will stand at this point.

Here is what my board will look like as I teach the verse.

Then, as you sing the chorus, you can hang or hold up different position cards to change their standing at random times. This will keep them engaged as they change their pose. You can have them change as many times as you want. You could also chose a child to point to the position everyone needs to do if you want to hang up all the different position cards at the same time. There are lots of different options!

Music Method

I highlighted the rhyming words in each verse. This could be a great time to mention that most music is written with rhyming words. A fun activity would be to cover those second and third rhyming words as you introduce the verse and have them guess what they might be. The pictures might give it away though…. sorry about that. 🙂

In this song, the chorus is the same after every verse. I feel that this song lends to singing the verse medium soft and then loud and with gusto on the chorus. This lends well with the sitting down on the verse and standing on the last phrase and chorus.

Happy Singing!
