I Lived in Heaven

This lovely primary song teaches about our Heavenly Father’s plan and our premortal choice. It also covers Jesus Christ’s role and actions to help us return to heaven. It’s a little temple and life lesson condensed into three short verses. Amazing! It can be found on page 4 of the Childrens Songbook.

There are a lot of important words in this song, but don’t be discouraged, we can teach them all! I like to think of this song as a story. All children love stories and don’t mind hearing them again and again. Repetition is your friend.

Visual Aids

Here is a flip chart to help teach this song. I would recommend making it into a book form. (That is putting the pages back to front and taping along the long side, like a book) I like to gather the children around me and read it to them while the pianist plays softly and slowly. Keep together with your pianist so that the children can feel the flow and patterns of the song as you read.

The second time you read through, you could ask the children to listen for an answer after every verse.

  1. Where did you live before you were born on this earth? Who gave the idea of an earth and the chance to go there?
  2. What did Heavenly Father need someone to do? Who were the two who wanted to help?
  3. Who did Heavenly Father choose to come to earth and give His life for us? What did His sacrifice do for us?

Music Method

I have been working with my senior primary with solfege. This is the practice of listening to themselves and learning about intervals and patterns in music. This is a great song to introduce looking at music and moving their voices up and down as the notes move up and down.

Here is a melody sheet. Make a copy for your children to hold. You could have the children point to the note on the staff and sing the easy words (do, pa, te) as the pianist plays the melody. Point out that the first and second lines are the same pattern. This exercise will help them get used to the jumps, directions and patterns of this song.

Then you are ready to sing with the words. This is a great way to have your older readers be able to sing all three verses. It also provides a tool to take home and review and teach their family!
